Halb Frau, Halb Fisch (Akt Ⅰ: Trennung)
Half woman, half fish (Act Ⅰ: Separation)
2023, sound piece, 29:33 minutes, feat. Ariane Goehringer
The voices of the mermaid sisters, Syrenka and Havfrue, can be heard singing, whispering, and conversing—questioning their separation and the bond of sisterhood. According to legend, the two mermaids swam from the Atlantic into the Baltic Sea, where they parted ways: one remained in Denmark, watching over Copenhagen, while the other journeyed onward, reaching the Vistula via Gdańsk and eventually arriving in Warsaw.
This medley intertwines the tale of these mythical sisters with my own story and that of my sister. It also weaves in quotes and melodies from literature and pop culture inspired by the myths of sirens and mermaids, drawing from sources such as Homer, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, Ingeborg Bachmann, Luka Bloom, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Disney’s adaptation, and the music of Mercedes Sosa, among others.
The work was shown as part of the solo-exhibition 2023 Half Woman, Half Fish (Syrenka & Havfrue) at DAS GERICHT in Frankfurt am Main.
